Christmas Caroling Party Friday!

Our Neighborhood Christmas Caroling Party starts at 6:15 pm this Friday (16th). We’ll plan to start caroling around 6:30 pm.

We can’t possibly cover the entire neighborhood so the plan is for one group to carol from the pool to Ellwyn, cross Longview, continue to Admiral, turn right, go to Plantation, turn right and then head back to the pool.  If we have time and/or more caroling groups, we’ll do more streets, around the same area. Next year we’ll cover another part of the neighborhood.

So if you are on the route and want the carolers to stop at your house, please turn all of your lights on – inside lights, too. If you don’t want carolers, please just keep your lights off.

We’ll meet back at the clubhouse for cookies and hot chocolate around 7:30ish.

Additional details:
  • If you can bring cookies, that would be GREAT – the more the better!
  • We’ll have copies of all the songs/words.
  • Please bring a flashlight and try to wear something bright and/or reflective.
  • If you have a guitar and know some classic Christmas songs – please bring it and plan to play!
  • If it’s raining, we will just sing songs in the clubhouse – we will not reschedule :)

Hope to see you there!

Hi Neighbors,

I know it’s December – but it’s never too early to be thinking about summer! Our swim and tennis club continues to grow, which is a good sign for the future of our entire neighborhood. We had 34 new families join this year and we are now at 164 members. We’ll be capping the 2012 swim season at 175 memberships, which means right now we have only 11 memberships left! However, I am 100% certain we will have more than that come renewal time, as I already know of several members who have moved or are planning to move.

If you are thinking about joining and would to secure your spot, you can pre-pay the initiation fee ($400) now and it is fully, 100% refundable if you decide not to join for whatever reason, between now and March 15th, 2012. Perhaps this would make a good X-Mas present for the entire family! Or maybe you are lucky enough to have parents or in-laws who’d like to buy you or the kids a nice present?!

If you purchase the initiation fee by midnight, December 23rd, we will email you a unique, personalized, one-of-a-kind certificate suitable for printing/framing that you can wrap and put under the tree :) You will also have immediate access to the tennis courts from now until March 15th, even if you decide not to join.

Nick Sheffey Memorial Tree

Many, many thanks to all of you who donated time and money to help us fund a memorial tree for Nick Sheffey. We were able to get a HUGE Red Sunset Maple tree. It’s beautiful! If you haven’t seen it, go check it out – it’s right in front of the pool, by the main entrance.

Also, many thanks to Huntley Hills neighbor, Ryan Tracy of Escape... Outdoor Lifescaping, 404-642-3408
He found us the tree and handled all the installation details. You can find his business on Facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Escape-Outdoor-Lifescaping/175177535857402

I’ve put photos of the tree on our Facebook Page:
http://www.facebook.com/HHSTC

In addition to the tree, we also raised enough money for a plaque and super awesome bike rack – which we will install this Spring.

Thanks Everyone!

Coat Drive

Hello!

Our 1st Annual Huntley Hills Thanksgiving Coat Drive is underway!! Please bring any gently used coats to the Huntley Hills Swim and Tennis Club this Saturday (19th) from 10 am to 12 pm or next Monday (21st) from 5pm to 6:30 pm. If you can’t make either of these drop off times but would like to donate, please email me off-line and we can make separate arrangements.

We are going to give the majority of the coats to the children and parents in need at our own Huntley Hills Elementary School. If we have additional coats, we will be working with local churches to make sure our donations reach fellow Chamblee residents.

Thanks!

Hi Neighbors,

Our Swim and Tennis Club is sponsoring a Coat Drive for Thanksgiving this year! We will be collecting gently used coats (in all sizes) and will distribute them throughout our Huntley Hills and Chamblee community. There are LOTS of children and families in need (many in our own neighborhood that you probably don’t even know about) and we hope you’ll consider them as you get your own coat racks ready for the winter season.

We have not finalized the drop-off dates/times yet, but it will be sometime late next week and the week of Thanksgiving. I wanted to send this out now so you will have time to go through your closets :)

Stay tuned for additional details...

Workday Sunday and Memorial Tree

Hello Members,

Just a reminder - we are having our last workday of the year this Sunday, October 2nd from 2-5 pm.

The Nick Sheffey Memorial Tree will be delivered Saturday and we need help planting it on Sunday. It's going to be big (a 4ft root ball) and it's going to be awesome! We are super excited!!

Many thanks to all of those who contributed money to the fundraiser! We also raised enough money to buy a nice bike rack for the front of the pool - we won't have that in time for the workday, but it will be coming soon.

In addition to the tree installation and general grounds work, we also need help in the kitchen - we are planning some off-season cosmetic improvements and hope to start the work on Sunday.

And of course, there is always general cleaning that needs to be done.

So please bring shovels, work gloves, sponges, buckets and anything else you can think of that might be useful.

We hope to see you Sunday!

Nick Sheffey Memorial Update

Hi Members,

MANY THANKS to everyone who came to our Labor Day fundraising events and/or donated money! We will be using all of the money to buy a big tree and bike rack for the front entrance to the club, dedicated to Nick Sheffey. We do not have all of the details finalized, but are estimating the project will cost between $800 - $1,400 - depending on exactly what we get and how much additional landscaping, etc we do.

So far we have raised almost $700.

If you would like to make a donation (or an additional donation), you can do so online, with a credit card:

Sunday's DIP-OFF is ON - rain or shine (!) and Monday's Cookout is possibly postponed

Hi Members,

It seems a tropical storm is headed our way this weekend....

However, the DIP-OFF Party Sunday night is ON - rain or shine! We'll be in the clubhouse and have lots of space under the roof outside to hang out. We'll probably even have some cornhole games going. We hope to see you and your dip there. And if you don't have a dip - come anyway!

If it's raining on Labor Day Monday from 12 -2 pm and there is a small crowd at the pool, we will postpone the cookout for a later date - to be determined. However, as long as it's not thundering, the bouncy playground and slip n' slide should be lots of fun in the rain!! We'll also be showing movies in the clubhouse throughout the day, for anyone that just needs to get the kids out of the house :)

Finally, MANY THANKS to Chad McRae and Sierra Nevada for donating LOTS of beer for the dip-off and Labor Day Cookout. We'll have it readily available Sunday night and Monday.

We hope to see you at the pool - rain or shine!

Subject: Friday Movie Night and DIP-OFF RSVP!
To: HHSTC <huntleyhills@gmail.com>

Hi Members,

Don't forget - we have lots planned for Labor Day weekend!

In addition to having a jump house and blow-up slip n' slide all weekend, we also have:

Friday - Movie Night in the clubhouse at 6 pm for the little kids.

Sunday - Pool is open to everyone - invite all your friends, family and neighbors!

Sunday Night - Adult Only DIP-OFF Party! If you are bringing a DIP (and we hope you do!) - please RSVP. We need to know what to expect so we can buy and plan accordingly. Click here to add your name to the list <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhP8t3qtwp3BdFVsX05zTy1nWGhqREhzbHJVbl90WFE&hl=en_US&authkey=CIDxoPoL> .

Also, since so many have asked - your dip does not need to be homemade. You can bring a store-bought dip and still compete for best presentation and/or best name. However, best tasting, most colorful and best dessert dip will be reserved for dips that didn't come pre-packaged from a store. Click here <http://hhstc.blogspot.com/2011/08/dip-off-details.html>  for more details.

Monday - Labor Day Cookout from 12- 2 pm.

All proceeds from the weekend will go directly towards a memorial tree (and hopefully a new bike rack, as well) - dedicated to Nick Sheffey. Click here <http://hhstc.com/Sheffey.html>  for more details and/or to make a direct donation online.

Thanks and we hope to see you this weekend!

Here are the prize categories:

Best Tasting

The club will provide tortilla chips and pita bread triangles. If your dip is just not happy with that and you want it to have something fancier - feel free to bring whatever dipper you desire. The club will also provide soft drinks and water. Please bring your own adult beverages (but please, no glass on the pool deck).

The party is open to all adults  - invite all your friends! So we can better plan, we do ask that you register to enter - by simply adding your name to this online spreadsheet <https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhP8t3qtwp3BdFVsX05zTy1nWGhqREhzbHJVbl90WFE&hl=en_US&authkey=CIDxoPoL> .

Labor Day Weekend and Nick Sheffey Fundraisers!

Hello Members,

We hope you are staying in town for Labor Day weekend because we have some great things planned!

But first - it's important to know that all of our events will be in honor of Nick Sheffey. For those of you new to the neighborhood and/or the Club – Nick was one of our Huntley Hills children who died last year in a terrible tragedy. You can read about it here:
http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/11-year-old-shot-308164.html

Nick never missed a day at the pool and we’d like to have a permanent memorial for him, at the front entrance to the Club. We are hoping to raise enough so we can buy a memorial tree and plaque. And it would be GREAT if we could also buy a bike rack that we can dedicate to Nick. He and his younger brother, Michael, were always seen riding bikes throughout the neighborhood - and Michael continues on without him, leaning his bike against the fence, everyday at the pool.

So here’s what we have planned:

Friday: Movie night for the kids. Bring blankets and pillows and get ready for some G-rated entertainment!
Suggested donation: $5/child

Saturday: All guest fees collected go directly to the memorial fund.

Sunday: Pool is open to everyone from 10:30 am to 6 pm
. We’ll have a bounce house and a blow-up slip n' slide for the kids! Tell all your friends, family and neighbors! Suggested donation: $5/person

Sunday Night: Adult only party and DIP-OFF from 7 pm till ?!? It's open to everyone and we are hoping LOTS of you will bring your best dip. Everyone attending gets to be a judge and there will be multiple winning categories - plus some fabulous prizes! Suggested donation: $10/person
.
Monday: Labor Day Cookout from noon to 2 pm. All proceeds go directly towards the memorial fund.

We hope to see you at some (or all) of these events!

- HHSTC Board

ps. As an added bonus, we have rented the bounce house and slip n' slide for the entire weekend (Friday - Monday!).

Friday Cookout/Kid Movie Night/Teen Swim & Change in Hours

Hi Members,

Friday's cookout is on! This is our last scheduled Friday night cookout for the season - we hope you can make it!

Since this is also the last Friday night before DeKalb Public School's start - we are having movie night in the clubhouse from 6:30-8:00. Movie TBD - but it will be an appropriate movie for young children. Please bring blankets and pillows! At the same time, we'll have a teen swim. Adults are free to swim, too - but please don't complain about the music or the teens monopolizing the pool - it's only for an hour and half :)

Don't forget, starting Monday, August 8th, our pool hours change to:

1 pm to 8 pm (T TH)
3 pm to 8 pm (M W)
3 pm to 9 m (Friday)
10:30 am to 9 pm (Sat)
11:30 am to 8 pm (Sun)

And new for Labor Day weekend - we are going to have an Adult Only Party Sunday, September 4th - from 8 pm until midnight. We are also hoping to step up the Labor Day cookout/party and rent some jump houses and/or a water slide for the kids. Details coming soon.

See you at the pool!

Friday's Cookout, Sat's Chamblee Day and Other News

Hello Members,

Friday's cookout (7/29) is on! The grill will be going from 6-7 pm. Sorry the notice is always so short - it usually takes us a week to find someone to do the shopping and at least 2 people to do the cooking.

Saturday (7/30) is our First Annual Chamblee Day!!

As you may know, last November, Huntley Hills and several surrounding neighborhoods voted to annex into the City of Chamblee. So now our Club is part of Chamblee - and we are very thankful for this! We've already been helped several times by their Police and Public Works Department. As our way of thanking Chamblee, we have opened our pool to all Chamblee staff and elected officials - and their families. So if you see some unfamiliar faces on Saturday, please take a moment to introduce yourself. If you meet someone from Chamblee - please thank them for serving and give them a friendly welcome to our pool. Thanks!!

In other news...

Summer is almost over for the school-aged kids - DeKalb Public School's start August 8th and our hours will be reduced (click here to see the schedule <http://www.hhstc.com/Hours.html> ). On a more positive note - remember that this year (for the first time ever) - we will be open for 2 weekends past Labor Day (Fridays - Sundays). And don't forget - we always have a cookout party on Labor Day.

And we are planning another social event - our First Annual Dip Off! We'll have an adult only party and a contest for who can make the best dip. So start thinking about your favorite recipes. Dates and details TBD. If you'd like to help with planning, please just reply to this email.

See you at the pool!!!

Friday - Game Night & No Cookout; Sat - Fireworks!

Hi Members,

This Friday (7/8) we will be having an informal game night in the clubhouse and around the pool deck. Bring your cards, favorite board games, etc and get ready for some friendly competition!

Also, we will not be having a Friday cookout b/c our regular "grillers" are out of town and no one volunteered online. So bring your own dinner (the grill will be available for anyone to use) or plan to order dinner at the pool. Please click here <https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsQyIehvdlzkdFFBdmZuWklIUTNpSF9zVm9ham8yY3c&hl=en_US>  to volunteer for the remaining Friday nights. Thanks!

And if you haven't already heard, Chamblee had to cancel their July 4th Fireworks due to weather and are planning to do the Fireworks this Saturday. They will have music and food vendors starting at 7:30pm and the fireworks begin at dark.

Have a great weekend!

Pot Luck Dinner Wed!

We are having our first potluck dinner this Wednesday (June 15th). We hope you can make it! Please bring a dish to share (with a serving utensil) and BYOB. The club will provide plates, napkins and utensils. We plan to start eating by 6:30 pm. If we have a good turnout, we can pay the guard to stay and keep the pool open past 8 pm.

To help ensure a variety of foods, I have posted a sign-up sheet online. If you know what you are bringing, please list it. Here's the link:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhP8t3qtwp3BdFVsX05zTy1nWGhqREhzbHJVbl90WFE&hl=en_US&authkey=CIDxoPoL

Also, please try to limit desserts, as we will also have ice cream to sell ($1) and want to make sure there is enough actual dinner food (and not just plates of cookies) to eat. Thanks!

- Leslie

ps. If you can help with the setup/clean-up, please reply to this email :)

Swim Lessons

FYI - our terrific swim team coach, Kristen Clayton, is also terrific at giving private swim lessons to children. Her rates are very reasonable! You can contact her at (770) XXX-XXXX to schedule (email us if you didn't get the email with her #). If she can't do it, she can help arrange for one of the other coaches, who are also great.

Upcoming Events and Early Pool Closings

It's going to be a busy week at the pool!

Tuesday - Home Swim Meet! Pool closes at 3pm and the meet starts at 5:30. Please come and cheer for our Hammerheads and help support the team by buying dinner at the pool and ice cream at Frosty Caboose after the meet.

Thursday - Swim-a-Thon! Our Hammerheads will be swimming to raise money - it's our biggest fund raiser! If you haven't found a swimmer to sponsor, please contact John Jewett <mailto:jwjewett@gmail.com> . Starting at 6pm - all the lane lines will be dedicated to the swimmers, but the shallow end and baby pool will be available for use.

Friday - Cookout! Food will be for sale between 6 and 7 pm. We sometimes start earlier and sometimes end later - just depending on what the volunteers can do. But be there by 7pm to guarantee yourself food. And please sign-up as a volunteer <https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsQyIehvdlzkdFFBdmZuWklIUTNpSF9zVm9ham8yY3c&hl=en_US> , if you can.

Saturday - Movie Night! The hands-down, undisputed winners in the online survey: Toy Story 3 and Hangover.

5:30 - 7:30 pm - kids movie in the clubhouse (bring pillows and blankets) AND teen swim! Adults are free to swim, too - but don't complain about the teens monopolizing the pool because at 9:00 pm everyone under 18 leaves and our adult only night starts! We'll be watching Hangover on a big outdoor screen. If you have a raft - bring it! And BYOB - but please remember, no glass on the pool deck. And yes, the pool will stay open past 10 pm :)

We'll also be selling pizza, popcorn, ice cream and drinks - starting around 5ish. If you can volunteer to help, please reply to this email.

Next week:

Tuesday (14th) - away swim meet and a GREAT non-crowded time to be at the pool.
Wed (15th) - membership pot-luck dinner (details coming soon).

Also, as a reminder - on Mondays and Wednesdays, our Hammerheads practice from 7pm - 8pm. This year we are not closing the pool early, as in years past, but the team does take up all the swim lanes.

See you at the pool!

Hello Members,

Due to logistics, our movie night has been changed to Saturday, June 11th. You won't want to miss it!

We have rented a big blow-up movie screen and will be watching movies in the pool! We'll start the night with a kid movie at 5:30. We'll be also be selling popcorn, pizza, ice cream and drinks  - so plan to eat dinner at the pool.

At 8:00 pm we will close the pool to kids and have an adult only night (18 and over)...and we'll be showing another movie.

Now...what should we watch?!? We have all made suggestions and now it's time for you to vote!

Here's the link:

If you can volunteer to help setup and sell dinner, please let us know (this will also count towards volunteer hours).

Thanks!

Weekend Events, Swim Meet and Other Stuff

Hi Members,

Just a reminder - we are having a cookout and ice cream tonight (Friday) from 6 pm to 7 pm. Rain or shine!

Burger or hotdog, plus chips and a drink for $4; ice cream for $1. You can buy pre-paid punch cards online <http://www.hhstc.com/Store.html> .

Monday is our Memorial Day party with another cookout from 12 - 2 pm. We will probably be very crowded, so you might want to bring your own folding chair(s) to guarantee yourself a spot to sit.

Tuesday is our first home swim meet. The pool closes swimming at 3 pm in order to get everything ready. Please come and cheer on the Hammerheads - it's always lots of fun! The concessions are great and very affordable - you should definitely plan to buy dinner and snacks at the pool :)

Additional notes:

  • If you have bought a guest fee/cookout punch card, it will be waiting for you at the cookout table. If you don't pick it up this weekend, we'll put it in the guard room for you to get at your convenience.
  • We are asking all members to sign-in at the front table. As a reminder, guests are $4/visit (3 and under are free). You can now put your guest fees in our brand new, super cool, locked guest fee collection box which you will find at the front table. If you have a punch card, please just ask the guard to punch it.
  • For new members and others that don't know - the kitchen is for use by all adult members. Feel free to put your food and drinks in the fridge/freezer - just label everything with your name. We also have a microwave and toaster oven for your use. If the room is locked, just ask the guard to unlock it for you.
  • If you need to reach somoene at the pool, call the pool phone at 404-457-0993 - just let it ring and hope someone answers :)
If you have any problems or questions about anything at the pool, please reply to this email or call 404-585-0657 .

See you at the pool!

Workday This Sunday (4/17) & Other Volunteer Help Needed

Hi Members,

Just a reminder, we'll be having our second workday this coming Sunday (4/17) from 1 - 5 pm. We will be doing general landscaping work (including finishing off the wood chip pile), cleaning out the bathrooms and hopefully staining the deck (if we have the volunteers and the weather is nice).

Please bring any wheel barrows, shovels, rakes, clippers, sponges, paint rollers, paint brushes, cleaning supplies or any other tools/equipment you think would be helpful. And don't forget to bring work gloves!

Also, we have bought 4 new plastic picnic tables (yeah!). They are sitting in the clubhouse, just waiting for someone to help put them together :) If you can't make the workdays and want to get in your 3 hours of volunteer time, this is a great chance - you can do it on your own time schedule. Please just reply to this email if you are interested.

Thanks!

Pool Hours - Last Chance to Vote!

Hi Members,

Have you let us know what you think about possibly expanding our pool hours?!? The Board will be voting on this in the next few days - so if you haven't already completed the survey, please do so ASAP.

Here's the link:

XXX (sorry, members only) :)
Also, to clarify some confusion, after DeKalb Public schools start (August 8th) we usually change the opening hour and instead of opening at 10:30 am, we do not open until 3:00 pm. The closing time stays the same (8:00 pm). You can view last year's hours online:
http://www.hhstc.com/Hours.html

If you have any questions, please let me know (but please save your comments for the survey, so that all the Board members can read them).

Thanks!

Want More Pool Hours? Take Our Survey!

Hello Members,

Every year for the last few years, as our budget has allowed, we have
added to our pool hours. Anyone remember when the schedule was
different every day, we often didn't open until 1pm and we closed at
8pm on Fridays?!? We have come a long way!

Since the beginning of the club, we have always dramatically cut back
the hours when DeKalb County Public Schools started. Over the years,
this has gotten earlier and earlier - this year it's August 8th! As
our membership has grown, we have been hearing more and more that the
August hours need to be expanded and we should stay open past Labor
Day.

What do you think? Take our survey:
Members only - if you didn't get the email, let us know.

Thanks!

-HHSTC Board

Ps. The free account on Survey Monkey only allows for 100 responses -
so if you click the link and it says Survey Closed, please just email
us your opinions :)

Dues are Due April 1st !!

Hello Members,

Time flies - we are less than 11 weeks away from opening day!

This is just a friendly reminder that dues are due by April 1st, or $50 late fee. If you have already paid - thank you! We will send final confirmation of payments after the April 1st deadline. If you haven't paid yet, please do so asap. You can pay online or mail a check to: HHSTC, PO Box 80141, Chamblee, GA 30366. We do request that if possible, you please pay by check. It's a little more work for us but we can save lots of money by not having to pay the credit card/PayPal fees.

Last year membership was at 150 and we plan to cap it this year at 175 - and implement a wait list if we get past that. In 2010 we added 22 new memberships and in 2009 added 24. So far this year, we've added 3. We don't expect to fill up this year, especially given the economy and the number of members that we know have moved - but you never know. We just want to make sure all members are aware that after April 1st renewals are not guaranteed.

Thanks for your continued support and we look forward to seeing everyone at the pool!

Notice of Annual Meeting
January 30, 2011

January 21, 2011

To:  All 2010 members of Huntley Hills Swim & Tennis Club
Re:  Sunday, January 30, 2011 Annual Meeting  @ 5:00 PM- HHSTC Clubhouse

We are looking forward to another exciting year at the club! Per our club By-Laws, we have our annual meeting the last Sunday of January in order to vote in the new class of board members.  In case you do not know, our board is comprised of two classes. Each class serves a two year term and is installed in an odd-even manner. This structure prevents the entire board from rolling off at the same time and promotes continuity in the leadership of your club. Per the By-Laws, the Board has a minimum of seven members and no maximum number.  Many members also have continued with multiple terms, which help with our continuity.  This year we are losing only 2 board members, myself included.

It has been my privilege to work with this board, and the other volunteers whom contribute their time and resources to make this club great!  We have accomplished many things, and I hope their efforts are not only appreciated but serve as an example for further volunteer participation!

I want to introduce you to our newest nominee for the class of 2011. He will begin serving a two year term at the Annual Meeting

John Jewett
John is our only new nominee to the board this year.  He is certainly no stranger at the pool as his contributions to swim team and other community service programs have been immeasurable!  As a long standing member of the community, and a public servant in the fire department, we are lucky to have his contribution here at our club!

Current members returning for another term: (in no particular order).

Braden Buck                                                            Leslie Freyman
Ann Hickman                                                           Francis Laba
Cindy Deminsky                                                     Ashley Kuehne
John Farrell                                                             Kevin Shannon
Missy Tate                                                               Kerri Henderson
Larry Pope                                                               Ryan Tracy

Please plan on joining us at the club on Sunday, January 30, at 5:00 PM. The meeting will be relatively short with introductions, a time for Q&A, and the vote for the new members of the Board of Directors. Immediately following the meeting, the new Board will hold the first Board meeting of 2011 to elect officers. If you can not attend the meeting, plan to cast your vote by visiting our web-site for a link to the ballot.  It is very important that we hear as many voices as possible. Visit our website for more information.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail at: ccsears2000@yahoo.com
or via the club website:  www.hhstc.com .

Thank you again for your contribution to our membership!
Chris Sears
HHSTC President (2010)
