Huntley Hills Swim and Tennis Club Update and Upcoming Events

Hello Huntley Hills Neighbors,

For those new to the area, you might not know...we have a gem of a Swim and Tennis Club tucked into the heart of our neighborhood. It's been awhile since I've sent an update about it, so here goes...

2012 was one of the most successful years our club has ever had! Our membership reached capacity, our social activities expanded, our tennis program grew and we continued to make improvements to our facilities. But the most exciting news in 2012 was that we paid off a 10-year, $130K loan in less than 4.5 years! Our Club is now debt free! You can read more about that by clicking here.

Things are continuing to get better. Since last Fall, we refinished our bathroom floors, painted our fencing, resurfaced our tennis courts, stained our tennis deck, bought more new pool furniture, added more shade to our pool decking, expanded our pool hours, added a junior swim team program and hired professional landscapers to maintain our grounds. We are also currently working on a Master Plan, that will include additional repairs, upgrades and capital improvements over the next 10 years.

The turn-around in our club could never have happened without the continued volunteer work of our 14 member Board of Directors and the on-going support and commitment from our wonderful members and sponsors. Many thanks to everyone who has had a part in helping our club! We hope in the future, many more people, in and around Huntley Hills/Chamblee will join and volunteer, so the success can continue for decades.

Speaking of joining...we still have some space for 2013 and we would love for more people to join! Click here for more information.

Here's our Community Summer Calendar...

Sunday, June 2nd – Good Neighbor Day!
The pool is open to everyone!

Saturday, June 15th – 3rd Annual Dip-Off Party

Tuesday, June 18th - Home Swim Meet
Come see all your neighbors, eat a great dinner and cheer on the Hammerheads - it's tons of fun!
Warning: lots of cars will be parked around the pool.

Tuesday, June 25th - Home Swim Meet (see above)

Sunday, July 14th – 50+ Pot Luck Dinner
Open to all residents 50 and over.

Thanks!

Very Important Pool Notes

Hi Members,

The pool is awesome and fun and we want you to always have a GREAT time at our club. Please just keep in mind the following rules, etc...
  • The baby pool is for children 4 and under and they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian inside the baby gate. The lifeguards are not responsible for watching the baby pool.
  • Adult swim is the last 15 minutes of every hour. Please make sure your children know this rule and exist the pool quickly. The children and the lifeguards need the full 15 minute break, for safety reasons.
  • There is a first aid kit in the guard room, with bandaids, etc. If you need guard assistance, the pool must be cleared (which is no problem, and should always be done in an emergency).
  • There is land phone line by the kitchen window, for quickly calling 911 (it routes directly to Chamblee; cell phones often go to DeKalb, which is known to put people on hold).
  • Parents are responsible for watching their own children. Lifeguards are a secondary level of protection from drowning. If you believe the lifeguards are not not watching the pool as they should and/or behaving inappropriately, please quickly report all problems to our President, Ryan Tracy (ryan-tracy@comcast.net).
  • Children 10 and over may come to the pool by themselves, provided they pass a swim test (swimming the length of the pool). Coming alone is a privilege, not a right, and will be revoked if there are problems.
  • Don't forget sunscreen! We try to always have backup sunscreen in the guard room, but no guarantees.
  • Children not FULLY potty trained need to always be wearing swim diapers. And please do not bring sick children to the pool. Thanks!
  • If you find the bathrooms are needing supplies, please report it to the lifeguard.
  • The kitchen is available at all times for adult members; please label your food/drinks and help us keep the kitchen clean. Thanks!
  • The Clubhouse should remain closed, unless rented for a private party.
  • Smoking is not allowed in or around the pool; there is a smoking area behind the clubhouse.
  • Members are allowed to bring alcohol - please just do not bring any glass containers. If it breaks and gets in the pool, we have to drain the pool. And do you know what it costs to refill the pool? We do! And you will, too - when we give you the bill :)
  • Guest fees are on the honor system, although Board members and lifeguards will randomly check the sign-in sheets and ask for pool tags. Please respect our guest fee policy
Whew! That's a lot of rules, etc! But wait...we have more. Click here to read all of our pool rules

So all of that said - we hope you have a terrific (and safe) summer at our pool!!

Memorial Day Weekend Update!

  • Today is opening day!! Hours are from 10:30 am to 10 pm. View our summer pool hours onlineNote: Swim Team has priority over the pool M/W from 7-8 pm in June.
  • Our Friday Night Cookout starts at 6 pm. $4 for a meal (burger/hotdog, chips and drink). Cash or punch cards only. Tonight Board member, Luis Moreno, will be in charge of the grill and he has as special surprise for everyone. So come check it out!
  • Saturday we will be having very informal Round Robin Tennis Matches - so bring your racket with you to the pool and get ready to break in our beautiful courts!
  • Monday is our Memorial Day Party! Cookout around 12ish. Same deal as above.
  • We have a bounce house for the kids all weekend, thanks to our terrific returning sponsor,Jump N' Slide (they rent bounces houses for only $110 for the entire weekend!).
  • If you haven't received your pool tag yet, it will be available in the guard room all weekend. If it's not, please reply to this email. Pool tags not picked up this weekend will be delivered or mailed Tuesday.
  • We will have member sign-in sheets at the front table, along with a guest fee box ($4/guest).View our guest fee policy online
  • Reminder: lifeguards are not responsible for watching the baby pool and all parents need to be responsible for watching their kids at the pool. Lifeguards are there to add a secondary level of protection. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 – 4, and the second leading cause when expanded to 19 years old.  A staggering 19% of these occur at guarded pools!
Be safe and we hope you enjoy our opening weekend!

Hi my name is Lili. I am 20 years old and this is my 5th year coaching the Hammerheads. I attend the University of Georgia and I am about to start my junior year. I am an Early Childhood Education major. I have been swimming since I was five years old. I swam on the Huntley Hills Hammerheads from age 6 to 18. I also swam for F.A.S.T. and Dynamo. Lastly, I swam for my high school all four years. So swimming has been apart of my life for as long as I can remember. For swim lessons  I charge $20 for a 30-minute private lesson with 1 child. If 2 children swim at the same time, I charge $15 per child for the 30-minute lesson. I am really looking forward to this season. I hope to get to know your children and make sure they have a lot of fun.

Tennis Court Resurfacing Starts Today!

Just a reminder - our tennis court resurfacing starts today (Wed). The courts will be closed for the next 5 days, so all the work can be completed. If they have consistently good weather, we may be able to open sooner.

Also - we will be restaining the tennis deck in the next couple of weeks - so be on the lookout for a notice regarding specific dates it will be closed.

Things are going to look fabulous for our opening day - Friday, May 25th.

Many thanks to Luis Moreno, Ashley Kuehne and others on the Board who helped make all of this happen. Also - thanks to everyone who donated money and/or attended our successful fun raiser events - look for photos on Facebook soon.

Have a great week!

Tennis Courts Closed Thursday/Friday & Weekend Tennis Events Update

Hi Members,

Our tennis fence is getting painted this ThursdayFriday and Sat am (May 9th - 11th), so we'll have to close the courts. Please make alternate plans at Blackburn, Keswick or elsewhere.

Also, as a reminder, our Tennis Fun Raiser is Saturday afternoon!
It's not too late to RSVP (which will really help us plan the food and drinks).

And Sunday we'll be having our Draw on the Courts Fun Raiser.
Click here for details. It's $5/child, $10/adult and now an all new option of $20/family.

Finally - the resurfacing and painting of the courts was supposed to start Monday but with all the rain, they've had to delay. We expect that work to now start on Wed, May 15th and take up to 5 days - and of course, the courts will be closed for that time period.

We hope to see lots of our members at both events this weekend!!

Come Draw on Our Tennis Courts - May 12th!!

Children and adults - come out and show us your chalk drawing prowess on our Huntley Hills Tennis courts!!

Sunday May 12 from 2p-5p

This is your chance to tag our tennis courts with your own chalk creations. A prize will be given to the best drawing.
This is another ” funraiser” for the refurbishing of our courts, which start the next day!!

Kids -$5
Adults $10

All money goes towards the major cosmetic upgrade our courts are getting this month.

We will have music and some snacks but please bring your own drinks and other snacks.
.
Bring your own chalk - no paint or markers - chalk only.

We hope to see you there!

President's Annual Letter/Update

HHSTC Members,

We hope you are as excited for the 2013 swim season as we are.  Swim team has started and soon all will be joining in the fun.  Returning members know the great fun and social events offered by our club.  Let’s help welcome new members so they can experience HHSTC while feeling comfortable and at home.  Thank you to ALL members for joining us for a new and exciting year!

As you know, our club is now debt free.  This has allowed the board of directors to become proactive in the management of our club.  Most importantly, we have the resources to create a positive, clean, member driven experience for everyone.  Every year we listen to member feedback and try our best to deliver results.  Some of the items delivered this year include:

  • Bathrooms floors renovated
  • July closing extended to 9PM
  • Swim at Own Risk extended to 10AM
  • Additional pool tables/chairs and lounge chairs
  • Additional side tables
  • Additional shade umbrellas
  • Shade cabanas sanitized and cleaned
  • Pool fence painted
  • Clubhouse/bathroom/kitchen cleaning barter
  • New pool management company hired
  • Pool handrail and ladders repaired
  • Entire facility pressure washed
  • Professional landscaping company hired
  • New toddler playground
  • Junior Hammerheads program started
We are also extremely pleased to announce that morning hours have been added a couple of days per week after kids go back to school in August.  Other improvements are continuing as well.  This past week erosion concerns were addressed under the tennis courts.  Over the next two weeks the tennis area will receive significant enhancements, which will ensure all appropriate maintenance procedures are being done, as well as increasing the aesthetic appeal of our club.  While immediate needs are being addressed, we have also begun looking towards, and planning for, the future.  Additional details on past, current, and future upgrades will be coming soon!

As we prepare for swim season, safety can never be stressed enough.  A few of us recently attended a pool seminar and we feel the need to share some startling statistics.  Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 – 4, and the second leading cause when expanded to 19 years old.  A staggering 19% of these occur at guarded pools!  Have a good time, socialize, and remember that WE as individuals are the first line of defense in ensuring the safety of everyone, especially the precious children in our community.

I feel privileged to be involved with HHSTC, surrounded by so many great members and a talented group of volunteers.  Each season we strive to build upon the success of the previous year.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of the board of directors at any time.  We are highly accessible and look forward to hearing your questions, comments, or concerns.

Thank you,

Ryan Tracy
